Florida softball has become a national powerhouse under head coach Tim Walton's watch. Walton is now in his 17th year at the helm and guided the Gators to a Southeastern Conference-leading ninth regular season title in 2021. Furthermore, Florida has won the SEC Regular Season Title five of the last six seasons under his leadership. In May of 2022, Walton reached his 1,000th career win, the second-fastest NCAA coach to achieve such a feat.

The five-time SEC Coach of the Year has led Florida to hundreds of school records and numerous additional SEC records. Additionally, his teams have earned numerous firsts for the Gator softball program, with an astounding record of 839-182 (.822) at the University of Florida.

Before his tenure at the Florida, he previously guided Wichita State to the NCAA Tournament in 2005, where his team posted a school single-season best 46 victories (46-18). He went on to win 123 games in three seasons with the Shockers. He was an assistant softball coach for the University of Oklahoma before taking his first head coaching position at Wichita State. Before that, Walton played in the Philadelphia Phillies organization from 1995-97.

Career Timeline

The five time SEC Coach of the Year recipient, has led his squads to 15 NCAA Regional appearances, 13 Super Regionals, 10 Women’s College World Series berths, eight SEC Regular Season Championships and five SEC Tournament Championships. Since 2006, the Orange & Blue have appeared in a nation’s best five WCWS championship series appearances. That success led to a 2015 NFCA Division I National Coaching Staff of the Year award and five NFCA Southeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year selections.

Charity Work

The Gators have not only excelled on the field but in the classroom as well under Walton. Since 2006, Florida student-athletes have achieved 18 CoSIDA Academic All-American honors, 127 appearances on the SEC Academic Honor Roll and 55 SEC Academic Honor Roll First-Year recipients.

He previously guided Wichita State to the NCAA Tournament in 2005, where his team posted a school single-season best of 46 victories (46-18). He went on to win 123 games in three seasons with the Shockers.

As a baseball player, assistant softball coach, and head softball coach, he's been a part of national championship teams. Walton was an assistant softball coach for the University of Oklahoma before taking his first head coaching position at Wichita State. Outside the collegiate environment, Walton has been preparing his student-athletes for success since he began with them. Since then, 14 Gators have gone on to compete in the National Pro Fastpitch league and nine players have been chosen to national teams including the United States, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.

After graduating from Oklahoma with a degree in history, Walton played in the Philadelphia Phillies organization from 1995-97.

Walton is married to the former Samantha Rhoten, who was a basketball player at Oral Roberts. The couple has two sons, Brooks and Palmer, and a daughter, Camden.

Giving Back

Off the field, Coach Walton strives to help the students on his teams, their parents and loved ones, and the greater community in and around Gainesville, Florida. Of late, Coach Walton has been helping to promote mental health awareness both in athletics and in life. He speaks frequently on this matter and puts on camps and provides instruction videos for softball players and baseball players alike.
